Today, I want to dive into the first of seven promises in this 7-week devotional series!
The first promise I want to look at together is God’s promise of guidance. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight.” The Passion Translation version reads this, “Trust in the Lord completely and do not rely on your own opinions. WIth all your heart rely on him to guide you, and he will lead you in every decision you make. Become intimate with him in whatever you do, and he will lead you wherever you go. Don’t think for a moment that you know it all.”
There are two types of promises in the Bible – conditional and unconditional promises. An unconditional promise is one that God alone fulfills and it’s not contingent on us, while a conditional promise requires our participation. It’s really important to distinguish the difference.
God’s promise in Proverbs 3:5-6 to guide our lives is a conditional promise that requires the following on our end: 1) we must trust and have faith in Him, 2) not rely on our understanding and 3) submit or surrender our ways. When we do this, He will make the path ahead straight.
God gives us free will to make decisions. When I find myself struggling to find my way, not knowing which way to go, I go back to this verse to make sure my heart is aligned with what God is asking of me. It’s not a fun feeling to be stuck or stagnant without direction in life. If you’re finding yourself in that place, have faith, let go and surrender to God’s perfect will for your life. When you do these things, God promises to guide your life forward. Don’t believe me? Try it out for yourself! And, doing life God’s way is the best thing EVER. He will take you places you only dreamed of going!
