Hey there, world changer!
Seek first the kingdom and all else will be added to you (Matthew 6:33). It’s such a simple truth, but it is so easy to let it subtly slip away from being your life’s focus.
When Jesus died and rose from the dead, he appeared to his disciples, one of them being Peter. Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved him. Almost frustrated and confused that Jesus was asking him over and over again, Peter answered, “Lord, you know that I love you.” After Peter repeated that he loved him, Jesus said, “then feed my sheep,” also meaning, take care of my people (John 21). You see, if we love the Lord, the kingdom and loving people have to come first.
I remember when I got called into homeless ministry and I had a laundry list of things I wanted to do and personal desires. I wanted to get married one day. I wanted to have a family. I was concerned about how I was financially going to survive. I was asked to lay down my corporate job and a bunch of other things that were important to me at the time. God knew my heart and the challenges I was battling internally when making that decision. But, what blew my mind, was that when I laid it all down, everything in my life came together. Literally, everything. And, I remember God telling me, “Ashley, if you take care of my people, I will take care of you.”
The Bible says that those who try to gain their own life will lose it, but those who lose their life for my sake will gain it (Matthew 10:39).
The best decision I ever made was to let go of my life and let God take over. Chasing after my own goals, plans and desires left me empty and there was always something missing. Chasing after God was the one thing that happened to me and brought me immense joy and fulfillment, unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced. Too often we think our lives need to look a certain way before we can say yes to the call of God. But, actually, God calls us to himself as we are. Put him first and everything you’ve been searching for will be found.
