Hey there, world changer!
There’s a verse in scripture that gets me every time. Let me give you a little context before I share the verse. It’s the story we all know so well in Genesis 2. God had just created the earth and then mankind in His image. He blessed them and commissioned them “to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it.” He gave them the freedom to enjoy all that He had made, but asked that they not eat from the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden. We all know the story, Eve was tempted by the enemy and ate from the tree, then gave some fruit to her husband, Adam. Immediately, they hid from God in shame. The verse that gets me every time… it’s in Genesis 2:9 where God called out to them, “Where are you?”
You might think to yourself, God knows all things and knew exactly where they were, why on earth would he need to call their name? God called them because he first wanted to demonstrate that this whole thing between God and man was about a personal relationship.
But, I want to take it one step further. Let me tell you another story. I remember vividly a time in my life when I was not walking with Jesus. I made all the wrong decisions, wound up in a relationship I knew I shouldn’t be in. This relationship nearly derailed me. I had just watched my grandma, who I loved so much, just battle a horrible fight with cancer and she had just passed away abruptly. I was hurting. I was lost and confused about my future. In the midst of this mess I found myself in, one night I heard God call out to me and I will never forget it. He said, “Ashley, what are you doing? You have a call on your life.” To be honest, I had no idea what that meant or why He was calling me out, of all people. A call on my life? Really? I had screwed things up royally.
And, this is my point. I look back and I was never lost. God already had His eye on me before I chose to walk away from Him. He saw a greater plan for my life. He saw my potential and who I was always created to be.
You see, a lot of times we think God calls our name and labels us with purpose when our lives are neat and in order, or let’s say “perfectly” put together. But, this is what I cannot seem to shake, God called us out of the mess. Out of all things God could have said to Adam and Eve when they just disobeyed Him and stepped outside of His will, He asked where they were. He called them.
My question today for you is this: what mess is God calling you out of today? He has a purpose through it all. You are not lost. You are found by an Almighty God in heaven who loves you more than you could ever imagine. There is nothing in this world that you could possibly do escape Him. You are found. You are labeled with purpose and destiny.
